Netherland: What is the purpose of banning Halal meat?
An Interview with Dr Abdul Majid Katme on Islam and Life with Tariq Ramadan
A vote was passed in April this year on bill banning slaughter of meat by Halal and kosher methods in Netherland.
The bill has passed through the Dutch parliament in June, despite opposition from Muslim and Jewish groups.
An alliance of an animal rights party and the Right-wing Freedom Party is heading support for the ban but representatives of Muslims and Jews have condemned the prohibition of Halal and kosher meat as a violation of their religious freedom.
The new ban requires that livestock must be stunned before being killed, contrary to the Muslim and Jewish "ritual slaughter" customs that require animals to be fully conscious.
In this edition of the show we ask the following question: Netherland: What is the purpose of banning Halal meat?
