Birmingham City Council discovers pork protein in Halal product

28 Mar, 2013

Birmingham City Council's environmental health team has discovered pork protein in a Halal meat product while checking for horsemeat contamination.

Pork extract was found in a pack of 20 Humza brand chicken burgers with a best before date of 10 May 2013.

The council stressed there is no evidence at this stage to suggest that the product's distributor, Birmingham-based Roshan Foods, has caused the contamination deliberately. The company is cooperating with the authority's ongoing investigation.

Further samples of the chicken burgers and other products have been taken and the results should be known by the end of the week. The Food Standards Agency has been informed of the find.

A product recall has been instigated and consumers who have bought the burgers have been advised to dispose of them or return them to the shop where they were purchased.
